It is not essential to learn how to tie flies but it does allow you a freedom to invent and tie patterns that you other wise would not be able to buy from a shop. It will save you money in the long run and like fly fishing it’s self is relatively inexpensive to start. There are a few things that are worth spending that little bit extra money on such as scissors and your vice. You don’t need masses of materials to get started you can begin with just a few well selected materials and then add to it little by little until before you know it you have a suit case full of furs, feathers and threads. Here are some of the essential parts of every fly tiers armoury.

Fly tying vices vary in shape, complexity and price, From a basic table top clamped vice to boxed sets which come with most if not all the tools you will need. Be sure to buy a vice that has a good grip on the hook as there is nothing more enoying than working on a complex part of the fly and the hook droping out! There are assorted attachments to the vice that you can buy designed to make your life easier, such as a magnifying glass or a light.

Bobbin holders clamp the thread bobbin and feed the thread through a tube making dressing the fly a simple task. It is worth buying a good quality holder with a smooth or ceramic tube as cheap models can have rough edges which can fray or snap the thread.
