"Jonathan helped me to understand the entomology of the water, and how to select and realistically present the necessary fly. With his help I managed to hook and land a 8lb Rainbow - my biggest fish in 40 years of fishing. He made it a memorable day, and got me hooked on fly fishing."
-John Harlow

"Having only fished small stillwaters it was quite daunting to take up resevoir fishing for the first time. Jonathan put me at ease, showing me what flies were likely to catch and how best to retreive them. It wasn't long before I caught my first ever resevoir brown trout at 4lb. A truly great day." -Chris Pritchard

"I've been fishing for years but started fly-fishing recently and had a
lot of trouble casting and with fly selection. Under Jonathan's tuition
I learned the basics of fly tying and how to fish the flys that I tied.
I improved my fly-fishing knowledge, technical skills and approach to
fishing such that I caught my personal best Rainbow trout of 9lbs 2ozs.
My job involves a lot of teaching and Jonathan's in-depth knowledge and
his ability to demonstrate as well as explain in a patient supportive
way makes him a great teacher and I recommend him highly. Thank You for
putting the fun back into fishing by making me a better fisherman". -

"I tried fly tying following instructions from a book with very little success. A couple of hours with Jonathan's instruction made life a lot simpler. He was very patient and a brilliant teacher!. Many Thanks" -Stuart Vickers

“ Having never fly fished before the prospect was very daunting, I attended one of Jonathans one day beginner courses on still waters. He put me at ease right away, he was patient, understanding and explained things very clearly. I really enjoyed my day and caught my first ever trout which weighed 7lb 8oz! Thank you very much” -Pauline Grimston

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for such a lovely day. Its was full of surprises and fun. I learnt so much from the way a rod is made through to the lines, leaders and how much I can learn by pond dipping to checking out the local bug life before choosing my fly and making that first cast. Thank you for teaching me how to cast, the joy of watching your line land on the water with out to many curls in, was, in its self for me was very satisfying. Would i go again? Oh, most definatly Yes. The whole day was lovely, thank you" - Deborah L. Collyer

"I spent a day with Jonathan learning about fly fishing, not that I thought I needed it!! How wrong I was.

I learnt that fly fishing is not just about thrashing the water into a froth and waiting for the fish to give in and hold up the white flag!

Jonathan’s knowledge on entomology, casting technique and water craft was second to none; he helped me to refine my casting, to match my fly to what was in the water and to pick out selected fish, which resulted in three nice rainbows each around the 5lb mark. After the day was over I was definitely bitten by the fishing bug again, highly recommended to anyone of any level." -Craig Ashcroft

"My wife Linda and I recently spent a day at Narborough with Jonathan. We had booked a holiday in Scotland, a large part of which is fishing for wild trout. I had some experience of casting a fly and so opted for the intermediate training. Linda had very little experience of fly-fishing and so went for the beginners training.

The day was made up of two parts. The morning dealt with the theoretical concepts of fly-fishing such as the appropriate equipment and the varieties of rods and reels available. I considered myself to have a reasonable knowledge around issues linked to fishing but soon discovered that I have much to learn. Jonathan has an in-depth knowledge of all things related to fly fishing and a real love of the sport that his enthusiasm was infectious. His knowledge of the river bank, what flies would be hatching and where they would be likely to be in relation to the river made the morning really stimulating for both Linda and me.

Part of the morning’s adventure was a tour around the rearing ponds and talking to the proprietors about their management of the lakes and its ecology. I saw some of the biggest, fittest trout I had ever seen and was impressed by the care and attention given to the rearing of these magnificent fish.

Through out the morning we had ample refreshment and when lunch came the theme of Jonathan and his colleagues caring for us was continued. It was such a pleasure to listen into the conversation of people who understand fish and fishing so well.

Our afternoon was spent with Jonathan giving us casting tuition. He is an excellent teacher, both knowledgeable and patient. In very little time he had Linda, who had hardly held a fly rod casting in a confident and comfortable way. I was also able to understand the problems that had in the past led to my casting abilities being erratic. Again Jonathan was patient with us and by the end of the afternoon we both had much more confidence in our abilities to place a fly on the surface.

We thoroughly enjoyed our day’s tuition. Jonathan is certainly a master of the art of fly-fishing and has real skill in teaching others how to develop their skills. If you want to learn more about how to develop your skills as a fisherman then I would certainly recommend a day with Jonathan." - John Scott.

''I'd just like to take this opportunity to thank you JT, for a fantastic day on the Derwent with yourself and my father. Working for Orvis I knew of your experience in fly-fishing, but to see it first hand as one of your clients was excellent. Your relaxed teaching style and endless patience made the cold waters of Derbyshire a pleasant place to be!! I'd learnt more in just a few hours than I believe any book could teach me. You've given me new confidence in my ability, and your enthusiasm for not just the fly-fishing but the conservation and entermology of the river created a day of great depth and greater appreciation. I would certainly reccomend your tuition to all who ask......a world class fisherman, tutor and a gentleman!'' - Matt.P.Cummins

"As a self taught fly fisherman, a day Grayling fishing with an expert has been invaluable. I had never even been fishing with an experienced angler before so Jonathan’s great teaching skills have given me much more confidence when fishing. By encouraging me with the things I was doing right and showing me deadly new techniques, I feel my fishing really has improved. Perhaps the best thing about the day… Catching more fish with Jonathan than I would have caught in a week on my own!" - Dan Elwood

We all had a great time.Your patience and persistance in getting us to actually pay attention
was slightly hampered by our hangovers. But believe it ! I will remember the key points.
Thank you once again for a truly memorable and interesting day.Hopefully will be back for the river course.

"I have no previous experience or knowledge of fishing, and was pleased to be able to learn the beginnings of fly fishing in a well paced and relaxed one day session.
It has really wet my appetite for fly fishing, and I hope to build on the valuable knowledge and practical instruction received from you. It just proves that if you want to get knowledge, learn from a good teacher.
It was worth the long drive from Surrey!
I can't wait to get my own tackle, and start what I hope will be a long association with Fly Fishing"

"I had never handled a flyrod before so booking an introductory lesson seemed the solution,my brother and I met Jonathan and were given a compact and extremely interesting intro to the art of fly-fishing.The intro proves invaluable before you start and the printed information to take away for reference is a great help,To get that first rainbow trout taking the fly will be a lasting memory and has convinced me that without the lesson and Jonathans vast knowledge I would have had little chance of ever mastering this great and unique type of fishing and I cant wait to try it again." - John Doherty
